A cause is something that leads to another thing happening. An effect is the
thing that happens because of the first thing.
When the power went out, the restaurant closed its doors early.
A restaurant cannot serve customers without power. It also would not
close early unless there was a good reason. So, the cause was the
power going out, and the effect was the restaurant closing early.
